Middle Grade/Young Adult Fantasy
(with a little bit of math)
After a year apprenticed to a bookkeeper Ellie had given up her dreams of learning magic and having adventures. She knows her father is right, that she should be grateful to work for the old mathematician. No, she doesn't want to be a farmer, but Ellie can hardly see the difference between growing onions and counting them.
But when her father is taken captive by a powerful and dangerous wizard, Ellie takes an unexpected journey with a new teacher and the frustratingly positive son of a fisherman to learn more about her talents and confront the man with the ability to manipulate both math's fundamental building blocks and Ellie's perception of reality.
I am so pleased at how this picture captures these characters and this important moment of their story. Please support this incredible artist!
Zach is lovingly supported and cheered on by his wife and three kids in Layton, Utah. He dreams of retiring from his engineering job and teaching high school math and creative writing (and maybe helping out with theater program and cross country team).
This story has gone from a long-time idea, to a rough draft, to a book that I am proud of thanks to the help of many people. But having a professional editor to make me (and help me) do the hard work was key. If you have a story to tell, reach out to her!
Wizards and the First Two Whole Numbers is a creative, pleasurable book, full of charming and relatable characters. It transports readers to a captivating, yet warring world, as well as flawlessly weaving together math and magic. This is an enchanting and original fantasy.
I'm actually enjoying learning about math and I find myself trying to figure out what "type" of math is being used before it's gone over. I'm LOVING the book.
What's in the newsletter? Updates about the book. Thoughts about writing. Previews of future stories. Opportunities to become a beta reader. Travelogs for research trips. (One can hope!) I promise no more than three emails a month.
